At this time there are no amendments that we are aware of scheduled to the construction regulations regarding energy-absorbing lanyards. The current minimum legal requirement to be met is CSA-Z259.11-05 (outlined in paragraph 6 subsection 26.1(3) of O. Reg. 213/91).
So what does this mean for the end-user? Do you have to replace all of your E4 E6 style lanyards?
No, as long as you inspect and maintain them as per the manufacture they can continue to be used.
When you purchase a new lanyard it most likely will have the new labels and weight ratings so you will have to apply O. Reg. 213/91 section 3(a)(b) Alternative Methods + Materials – Equivalency could be considered if a worker wants to use an energy-absorbing lanyard that meets CSA Z259.11-17. Should a worker use a lanyard designed to the 2017 standard, this would be considered equal (equivalent) to the standard referenced in the regulation. Whether the lanyard meets a section 3 equivalency or the cited minimum standard, the user must still comply with the specific manufacturer’s instructions outlined for the category to which his/her lanyard belongs (O. Reg. 213/91 section 93(3).
